Transforming Cultures Through Social Media Waves

Transforming Through Social Media WavesA couple of weeks ago we were lucky enough to have Bryan Kramer come talk to our EMEA marketing team about the impact of social and community.  About half way through he talked about social media impact and how it normally begins like Mexican wave.  It starts small but gains momentum over time and before you know it everyone joins in and the social media wave suddenly has a huge impact.Download our FREE Employee Advocacy Workbook and learn how to plan an advocacy program in 8 simple steps.

Being the crazy bunch of marketers that we are, we all decided to start a virtual Mexican wave over the webinar just to see if we could replicate what Bryan was talking about.  It's quite funny to watch people bobbing up and down in the office.  You could see who was dialed into the call and the look of confusion on the faces of those who weren't.

It got me thinking.  After launching our #GetSocial program several months ago (our employee advocacy training program) we're fast gaining momentum.  Hundreds are joining the webinar series to learn how they can build their professional brand online.  They're joining our internal SAP Jam group where we share useful articles, exchange knowledge and answer questions - like a buddy system where employees naturally learn through a social platform.

But the wave is gaining momentum.  Last week alone I was approached by 4 different leaders asking from a similar program tailored for their team and Exec leaders want to know how they can get involved.  Word gets around.  People become interested.  Folks start seeing results.  Suddenly it becomes noticeable.

Then a colleague of mine (Nithyanandan Sh) shared this article on Forbes - "The Evolution Of The Employee" via Forbes (Infographic below).  It made me realise that in a truly social businesses, waves aren't started by Exec Leaders.  They start within the employee community.  They gain momentum.  They gain power as they build in community.  These kind of waves have the enough power to transform organisations and cultures and what fascinates me the most, they can be started by ANYONE!
