Social Media & Employees - How Not To Handle It...

Should we, shouldn't we?  There's so much debate (normally within IT) about social media and employees and whether employees should be able to access social media channels at work and on seeing this Dilbert cartoon I did have to chuckle out loud because I think it sums up what many companies are experiencing...the fear of transparency.

My opinion is very clear-cut.  Yes, employees should be able to access social channels at work.  Yes, they should be given some guidelines for usage.  Yes, it is transparent and yes, it will be difficult to monitor.  However, err on the side of opportunity.

Concentrate on engaging your employees in the brand, help them understand what the business does, why, who for and what makes it so different.  Share customer stories.  Share employee stories.   Connect people to the brand and in turn the brand will be connected to people...via your employees.  It will take time but this approach to influencing may just win you the best talent, the most productive workforce and even new leads.
